How to Connect
Connection Types
If your computer has Ethernet capability (How do I tell?) you may use the Fast Ethernet connection (wired) provided in your room. Another option is to use the Res Hall Wireless data network, UoR.
Connecting Via the Wireless Network
To connect to the Res Hall Wireless Data network, you will have to manually configure your connection. For instructions on how to connect, please click here. If you need help, please contact your ResNet staff at x-8921.
Connecting Via Ethernet
To connect using your Fast Ethernet Card, please first ensure that your card and system adhere to the requirements listed in Frequently Asked Questions. If you have purchased a new Fast Ethernet Card, a CAT-5 Ethernet cable with RJ-45 connectors should be included. This cable will be similar in thickness to a cable-TV wire, though the connectors will resemble a telephone wire, though if you look closely they are slightly larger. If you don't have a cable, you may purchase one at the bookstore. We recommend a cable lenght of 10 - 15 feet.
Turn your computer off and plug one end of this wire into the back of your computer in the port of your Fast Ethernet Card, there should be only one port. If you have a notebook computer (Windows or Mac), you will find the port somewhere on the side, or back, of your laptop. Consult your User Manual for the exact location.
Turn your computer on. The computer will automatically detect that a network connection has been made and will configure your setting for you. If you experience problems, please call your friendly ResNet staff for assistance at x 8921.
